Washington County History & Landmarks Foundation

Nonprofit Overview

Washington County History & Landmarks Foundation (WCH&LF) is a private, nonprofit educational organization that encourages the preservation of buildings, landmarks and sites which are deemed representative of the culture, architecture and history of Washington County, Pennsylvania.

Incorporated in 1973, the WCH&LF has been instrumental in locating, identifying and listing properties for its own landmark certification program as well as listing individual structures and districts on the National Register of Historic Places. Since its inception, the foundation has been successful in helping many historic building owners in the preservation of their structures. Advice and referrals are only part of our mission.

Landmarks offices are located in the 1806 stone house, located at the entrance to Washington County Fairgrounds. The heirloom garden at its entrance is lovingly maintained by Washington County master gardeners. During the annual county fair, exhibits highlighting various aspects of county history are on full display for the public.

Current Needs

The Washington County History & Landmarks Foundation needs volunteers to aid our all-volunteer board of directors! Between behind-the-scenes projects and community events, they are needed to represent the foundation and carry out assigned responsibilities. In the past, on neighborhood /community walking tours, local "historians" have been most helpful in sharing their hidden treasures.

In addition to assisting homeowners of early county structures, we strive to educate our local residents on the rich history of our farms and in our towns as discovered in preserved buildings and sites.

We also encourage volunteers to share ideas and feedback for ways we can expand our presence in the community.

As our board is comprised of mostly older members, we are eager to attract and gain knowledge and technical assistance from our younger history buffs, including students.

Currently we are uploading data gathered since the early 1970s, and welcome folks who can help!
