Nonprofit Overview
Throughout Washington County, The Salvation Army provides critical support to meet basic needs as well as a variety of enrichment programs.
The Washington Salvation Army strives to help families and individuals develop healthy lifestyles emotionally, mentally & physically. A variety of life skills and character-building activities are available for youth such as music & arts, cooking and archery. The teen, women and men’s group activities encourage engagement in healthy activities & conversations. Additional initiatives include Love in a Backpack that provides supplemental weekend food during the school year for children from 7 local schools, a monthly produce distribution that serves 850+ households in the county, and Best Foot Forward that provided over 80 children new shoes in 2024.
The Mon Valley Salvation Army in Donora focuses on programming that not only brings families together for activities but also develops life skills and healthy relationships. Men, women, teen, and youth group activities include movie night, games, trips, arts & crafts, biblical teaching as well as meals and snacks. A wide range of feeding programs are offered to those in need including a food pantry, emergency food boxes, and various community outreach food distributions. Youth in the Mon Valley can receive a weekly hot and healthy meal on Tuesdays & Wednesdays and participate in the Summer Feeding program. In its 9th year is the “Feeding the Students” program at the Douglas Education Center in Monessen where student receive a hot nutritious lunch every Wednesday.
Aside from character building and feeding programs, The Salvation Army provides financial assistance with rent, utility, and other housing needs when funding is available. By focusing on meeting basic needs that contribute to overall well-being, The Salvation Army programs support stronger individuals and families that create a vibrant community.
