Southwestern Pennsylvania Area Agency on Aging
Nonprofit Overview
The Southwestern Pennsylvania Area Agency on Aging (SWPA AAA) is a private, non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to promote the wellbeing of older adults through a planned, coordinated and collaborative program of health and social services. Our Agency assists older adults to live independent, meaningful and dignified lives within their own homes and communities. Both directly and through our network of sub-contractors, our organization provides services and supports to about 14,000 older adults each year. Some of our services include Senior Community Centers; health and wellness programs; Home- Delivered and Center-based meals; support for caregivers; in-home assistance with personal care and home management; and the prevention and elimination of the abuse, neglect and exploitation of older adults.
Current Needs
The Home Delivered Meals Nutrition Program reduces hunger and food insecurity and ensures adequate nutrition by providing nutritious, hot meals to older adults in their place of residence. For many of our meal recipients, the meals that we provide serve as a nutritional lifeline. In many cases, it may be the only complete meal the older adult has on a given day.
Due to health problems, limited social supports, or lack of financial resources, many of our meal recipients also have difficulty adequately preparing for a weather emergency, power outage, or other unexpected event. Provision of emergency shelf-stable meals ensures that our program participants do not go hungry when one of these events forces the suspension of our regular services.
Our organization welcomes financial donations for the Home Delivered Meals Program. Senior Centers also need volunteers to assist with meal delivery.
